In the old days of the Jews, the law was taken literally. No one was apart from it. The longing to be set free from the law is woven throughout the written record of the Torah. When the One came to earth to do away with the old laws and old covenants, the Jews rejected Him. They would not accept a new covenant of the Messiah in Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ's death fulfilled those laws. "... God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that were against us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (Colossians 2:13-15)
Therefore, those who are in Christ Jesus must live by the spirit. Christ said in John 6:63, "The Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken are spirit and they are life." A life that is controlled by the law is not in Christ, but a life guided by the Spirit dwells with Him who died and took the laws with Him so we can live freely in His life.
